Highlights from the Region 6 Leadership Meeting
Get Your Motor Running!
We certainly did at the Region 6 Leadership Meeting in Dallas on March 21st and 22nd! Your VP of Finance, George Hoff; your VP of Technology, Barb Inman; and I represented your chapter at a great weekend of workshops, networking, and learning. Every chapter in Region 6 was represented by at least one of its officers. We shared experiences, heard success stories, and came away with some great ideas to add value to your experience as a member of the Central Mississippi chapter.
The highlight of the conference in my opinion was keynote speaker Clyde Fessler, VP of business development (retired) for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Clyde was on the team that took over in the early 1980s when Harley-Davidson management bought the company from AMF. Clyde told us the story of the Harley turnaround. At one point in those early days the bankruptcy papers were signed and ready to be filed when the company received a last minute line of credit. We learned of the ways that Harley management examined their strengths and weaknesses, analyzed the competition, and got out into the field to solve the company’s problems. Clyde talked about knowing your market and knowing your audience in order to align one to another. He told a great story of his first experience at Daytona Bike Week when he showed up looking quite unlike his audience and lost the collar off of his “John Travolta disco shirt” as a result! Clyde grew the Harley Motorclothes business from $20 MM to $120 MM and launched the Harley Owners Group, an enthusiast club with over a million members. It is a great success story and one that inspired all who heard.
Clyde urged us to involve our customers – that is those of you reading this – and we want to do that. Let us know what you want, tell us how we are doing in adding value to your profession, and by all means GET INVOLVED in your chapter. There is plenty to do and there is a place for you!
The 2016 Region 6 meeting is already set for February 26-28. It is being hosted by the chapter that gave birth to us, the Greater New Orleans chapter. I have pledged support to our “founding fathers” to help them in any way we can. It is the least we can do.
